If you live in Pittsburgh or have spent a good amount of time in the city, you may be familiar with Saint Peter and Paul Church, the now-defunct building that looms over East Liberty. First built in 1890, the abandoned church was once a popular gathering place. Check out these incredible photos of the interior, captured by urban explorer and photographer, SHVWN Cooper .
Saint Peter and Paul Church can be found in Larimer Avenue in East Liberty in Pittsburgh. As you can see in this photo, it is adorned with gorgeous stained glass.
From the time the church was built in the late 1800s through the 1900s, it was a major community landmark on the East End of Pittsburgh. Originally, it was home base for a large community of German Catholics.
Anyone familiar with Pittsburgh will recognize Saint Peter and Paul's distinctive twin spires. The church was closed in 1992 when along with five other churches, its congregation joined St. Charles Lwanga church.
The church served as one of the most distinctive shooting locations for Kevin Smith's 1999 film "Dogma."
Today, Pittsburgh residents debate what the best future would be for the church. Some believe it should be renovated so that weddings and other events can take place there, while others think it is merely an eyesore to the community and should be demolished.
