Coming face-to-face with the paranormal probably evokes different reactions in different people. Some may feel thrilled to encounter spirits from the beyond while others might be a bit spooked. Pennsylvania certainly has no shortage of haunted destinations, including cemeteries. If you’ve not heard the haunted tale of Hans Graf Cemetery in Pennsylvania, you might find it a bit spooky.
Tucked away in the village of Rowenna in Lancaster County, Hans Graf Cemetery is guarded by an old stone wall that’s been worn down with the years.
The cemetery takes its name from Hans Graf, the area’s first settler who is said to have arrived from Switzerland in 1711. After having married twice and having fathered 11 children, Graf died in the mid-1700s.
Interestingly enough, Graf isn’t even buried in the cemetery that bears his name. He’s buried in the Groffdale Mennonite Brick Church Cemetery in Leola, about a half an hour from Rowenna.
If you’re daring enough to visit the cemetery, don’t be surprised to hear the consistent barking of the White Ghost Dog. The ghost dog is often accompanied by the howling of nearby dogs.
The White Ghost Dog will continue to howl and will not settle down until you – or other visitors – leave the cemetery. Paranormal investigators have even caught the ghost dog barking on tape.
Those who have visited the cemetery tell of taking photos where orbs mysteriously appear, perhaps the apparitions of the unknown souls who are said to roam the cemetery.
If you’re visiting on the evening of a full moon, be very careful of your movements. Local legend states that if you circle the cemetery seven times during a full moon, you’ll die.
