Elk roam free in the quaint town of Benezette. Drive carefully because you'll certainly pass plenty of elk as you arrive in town. Make one of your first stops the Elk Country Visitor Center. Allegheny National Forest - at more than a half of a million acres - is huge. And, even that's an understatement. Plan where you want to go and what you want to see in the forest before you set out on your road trip. (Or else you might miss something you really wanted to see.) The national forest is home to such sites as Jakes Rock Overlook, the Allegheny Reservoir, and Hickory Creek Wilderness Area.

Our next two stops go hand-in-hand. Tioga State Forest, home to Pine Creek Gorge (our next stop). spans more than 160,000 acres. Nestled in the Pennsylvania Wilds, Tioga State Forest beckons hikers, bike riders, horse riders, and cross country skiers. Visit an 1830's gristmill, Hesselgessel Mill Stone, on your way to one of the scenic vistas. Pine Creek Vista, for example, promises sweeping views of the state forest.

Discover unparalleled views of Pine Creek Gorge - the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania - from either Leonard Harrison State Park or Colton Point State Park. Perhaps PA's most well-known natural wonder, Pine Creek Gorge spans nearly 50 miles and has a depth of more than 1,000 feet.

Hugged by Loyalsock State Forest, the cozy Worlds End State Park spans less than 800 acres. Spend the night, or a few, at the lush state park that offers both group tent camping and rustic cabins. Wile away the hours at the park, hiking, swimming, or whitewater rafting. Other popular activities include wildlife watching and fishing, the ideal way to end your road trip.
