PA’s a pretty amazing place to live, right? Most of us would agree or else we wouldn’t live here. But, just like anywhere, PA has its downsides and things that cause us Pennsylvanians frustration. We all have our own personal pet peeves about PA, certainly, but then there are a few things to which we probably all can relate. In fact, here are 12 of the most frustrating moments every Pennsylvanian has experienced at least once. See if you agree.
1. Languishing behind a slow driver on the back roads…
PA boasts plenty of picturesque back roads, perfect for admiring the views and avoiding the traffic of the main roads. Sure, we have good days when we zip along the back roads, making great time. Then, there are those days we get stuck behind a Sunday driver, who just can’t seem to even reach the speed limit.
The left lane, at least in PA, is the passing lane, right? And, how many times have you merged into the left lane to pass a slow driver in the middle or in the right lane? Only problem is – you guessed it – a driver just lollygagging rather than passing.
But, sometimes it’s not even a car that slows us down. Sometimes we get stuck behind a horse-drawn buggy, which can be pretty frustrating if we need to get somewhere on time.

4. Running out of food just before a snowstorm hits.
Isn’t that always the way? You planned your trip to the grocery store all week. And, on the day you’re heading there, the weathermen announce an impending snowstorm. So, now you have to shop elbow-to-elbow with the Pennsylvanians who have to stock up on milk, bread, and toilet paper.
We should be used to it now. After all, Pennsylvania has the highest gasoline tax in the country. That means we pay a pretty high price per gallon. But, sometimes, the sticker shock still frustrates us.
Ditto with the toll booth. Most of us have learned to find alternate, non-toll roads to get where we’re going. But, sometimes, we have no choice but to take the turnpike. And, the price to drive on the PA Turnpike just keeps going up – and will into the 2040s.
See if this sounds familiar. Wake up in the morning to snow on the ground. Dress in winter clothes and a winter coat before heading out of the house for the day. By the end of the day, the heat of the sun makes it feel like a summer day. We’ve all dealt with not knowing what to wear because of the finicky PA weather.
8. Explaining that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia really aren’t that close.
Sure, if you don’t live in PA, you might assume that Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are a few minutes down the road. But, in reality, traveling between the bookend cities is about a five-hour drive or 305 miles.
Summer oughta just officially have its name changed to road construction. And, how many times has that road construction come as a complete surprise to us, making us late when we were just making such good time?
That’s not how we do it in PA. We give – and receive directions – using minutes and landmarks, not miles and street names. Thank goodness for GPS to guide us along these days, right?
PA really could get away with becoming the "Pothole State." Most of us have learned how to navigate those pesky potholes, swerving like a pro to miss them. But, every so often, we also have one that just seemingly jumps right in front of us. And – bam! We just can’t miss it.
Driving in PA can be tricky, especially with all the potholes and deer. We’ve all had that moment where our heart leaps into our throat and our adrenaline starts pumping because we came thatclose to hitting a deer. (And, unfortunately, some of us haven’t been able to miss.)
