Pennsylvania’s a paradise for outdoor lovers. Even if you’re not into hiking and biking, you’ll find a plethora of things to do all over the state. French Creek State Park in Pennsylvania, a secluded natural oasis, promises plenty to do all year around. Hiking? Check. Picnicking? Check. Bird watching? Check. And, of course, that’s just the beginning. Take a look.
Stretching more than 7,000 acres, French Creek State Park boasts the "largest block of contiguous forest" between New York City and Washington DC.
The natural oasis beckons visitors with its wide variety of activities. You'll discover so much to do you just might want to make plans to camp out overnight or for a few nights.
View the vast wildlife that calls the state park, surrounded by the Schuylkill Highlands, home. Squirrels, deer, and an assortment of birds are among those who live in the park.
Be sure to stop by Pine Swamp Natural Area, a 90-acre swamp that has been designated a State Park Natural Area. The National Audubon Society has also named the park an "Important Bird Area."
Of course, French Creek State Park is an ideal destination any time of the year. Popular winter activities include cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding, and hiking.
Spend those hot summer days cooling off in the swimming pool. (All visitors are charged a fee for using the pool.) The pool (and concession stand) is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Or, try something a little different. A few rounds of disc golf, perhaps? Or, maybe a challenging game of orienteering? The popular activity involves individuals using a map and a compass to follow a self-guided course in the park.
