Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks and 20 state forests have long been popular destinations with residents and visitors. That popularity has continued to grow and exploded during the pandemic, which has led to some exciting changes. One of those changes is Governor Tom Wolf’s announcement, in July 2022, that three new state parks and a gigantic ATV park in Pennsylvania will be created.
Little has been revealed about the locations of Pennsylvania’s newest state parks, which were funded in the most recent 2022-2023 state budget, but a lot more is known about the new ATV park coming to Pennsylvania.
The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) announced in August 2022 that it had purchased 5,600 acres of land that will be the site of the new ATV, dirt bike, and motorized vehicle park.
Nestled in Weiser State Forest, which spans both Schuylkill and Luzerne counties, the ATV park will be the first of its kind. Officials estimate that the park will open in around two years.
The goals of the park’s development are two-fold – to provide those with motorized vehicles, like ATVs, a safe place to enjoy their hobby and to work toward conservation goals in the Catawissa Recreation Area, the site of the park.
That doesn’t mean visitors can’t go to Weiser State Forest during construction. After all, the nearly 30,000-acre state forest offers a full menu of activities – hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, kayaking, boating, and hang gliding.
