Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary Is Best Butterfly House In Pennsylvania

Spring means the return of the birds and not that long after butterflies will begin flittering through the air, making us stop and marvel when we catch sight of them. Pennsylvania’s home to several butterfly houses, usually housed within larger attractions like Longwood Gardens. This butterfly house in Pennsylvania, however, stands alone and is definitely a bucket list-worthy add.

Be prepared for some close – very close – encounters with beautiful butterflies when you visit Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary in Jim Thorpe.

The sanctuary, which welcomes walk-in visitors during the summer months, provides the perfect way to spend a few hours as you learn all about butterflies.

Start your visit by watching a brief video on butterflies before heading to the Flutterarium, a room where butterflies fly free. Don’t be surprised if one lands on your head or even on your nose.

Keep the fun going after your visit to the Flutterarium with a stop in the Frog Room. There, you can marvel at some of the world’s most beautiful frogs – from dart frogs to bumblebee frogs.

The Frog Room is also home to Oriental Firebelly Toads, an aquatic species. Listen carefully and you might hear the boy toads barking at the girl toads.

Be sure to stop by The Monarch Gift Shop, too, where you can find such fun items as butterfly hatching kits, bug boxes, and backyard explorer kits. You’ll find plenty of educational items and souvenirs, too.

Bear Mountain Sanctuary also welcomes groups, beginning on April 21, 2020. Visit for such fun group programs as Butterfly School 101.

Start planning your visit to Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Walk-in hours for the season will begin on June 6, 2020, and run until August 23, 2020.

The sanctuary walk-in hours are Monday and Thursday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
