Drum roll, please. The Pennsylvania Trails Advisory Committee has officially announced its “Trail of the Year” in Pennsylvania, an annual tradition that shines the spotlight on one of the state’s many picturesque trails. Brimming with natural beauty and attractions along the way, the 38-mile D&H Rail Trail has grabbed the title of Trail of the Year in Pennsylvania for 2021.
Winding nearly 40 miles through Lackawanna, Susquehanna, and Wayne Counties, the Delaware & Hudson Railway Trail, the 2021 Trail of the Year, follows a former railway corridor.
Because it's rated easy, the picturesque trail appeals to hikers of all ages and skill levels. It's also popular with bikers and horseback riders and, in the winter, snowmobilers.
Bring along plenty of snacks and drinks for your trek, which you can enjoy on one of the benches that dot the trail. The trail also features picnic tables.
While you'll travel through some wooded areas, expect much of the trail to be soaked in sunlight. Sunscreen is a must, especially if you're hiking during the warmer months.
The trail meanders through several small towns, including Forest City and Thompson, making it easy to hop off to explore, to take a break, and to grab a bite to eat.
