The Vertical Street In Oregon That Is Unlike Anywhere Else In America

The Oregon City Municipal Elevator is not your average elevator. This unique machine operates as one of only four municipal elevators in the world, and is the only “vertical street” in North America. Built in 1915, the elevator has a rich history and plays an important role in the Oregon City community. Let’s take a look at this one-of-a-kind attraction:P

Back in its early days, Oregon City was located along the Willamette River. As the city expanded upwards to the surrounding bluffs, the only way for residents to travel between the upper and lower levels of town was by climbing 722 stairs.

This is how the idea for the Municipal Elevator came about. Residents needed to find an easier way to travel between the two different parts of town.

Today, the elevator is one of the top attractions in Oregon City and the only elevator in the United States designated as an actual street. The best part? You can take a ride on it for free!

Stepping into the vintage, 1950s elevator is like taking a step back in time. A wonderful operator will be on hand to press all the buttons for you.

Once you make it to the top, you'll find a stunning observation deck, complete with historical photos and information.

Here's a before and after photo from 1955 of the original elevator being replaced with the current version.

After touring the observation area, make your way outside onto McLoughlin Promenade, a delightful walk located along the edge of the bluff.

The elevator is open Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Click here for more information.
