I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Tucked away in eastern Oregon, on national forest land, there’s a tiny deli and store that’s a true treasure. The Oregon Trail Store & Deli is located in a historically rich part of the state between Pendleton and La Grande. It’s a treasure trove of goods and goodies: a legendary deli, small grocery, gift shop, history museum, and even an Airbnb! If you’ve never visited this hidden gem in Meacham, Oregon, it’s high time you did.
Eastern Oregon is most-known for its significance along the eponymous (and infamous) Oregon Trail.
Nestled in this region, Meacham is a teeny tiny little town that, if you blinked while driving along 1-84, you'd miss. But you wouldn't want to miss this place.
Because it's here where you'll find the Oregon Trail Store & Deli, a delightful little establishment that's been serving the good people of Meacham for decades.
The inside of this deli is best described as a delightful hodgepodge of memorabilia, souvenirs, and snacks, with mismatched booths and old photos filling out the space.
But it's the burgers here that keep folks coming back time and time again. Big and beefy, juicy and perfectly charred, many say the burgers here are the best they've ever had!
This establishment also serves killer pizza and soups, and the fries and desserts are all homemade. They've also gained a devoted following for particularly tasty Tex-Mex inspired fare -- Taco Tuesday is a big deal around here!
This little cafe/deli/general store in Oregon really is the sum of all its parts, wrapped up in a wholly unique experience. It's a community hub and gathering place; the couple pictured below met here, at this very formica booth, many years ago. On their anniversary, they returned to this special spot to celebrate.
If this place speaks to you on a deeper level as well, and you want to stay awhile, we get it. And luckily for you, there's a campsite next door (a minute walk from the store's front stoop!) that you can reserve via Hipcamp. How cool!
There are some places that not only stand the test of time; they embrace their age and place in this wide, wonderful world. And the Oregon Trail Store is most definitely one of those places.
Have you ventured out to the this hidden gem in Meacham, Oregon, before? What a unique place to visit!
If you’re into old-school general stores like this, you’ll definitely want to check out M. Crow & Company General Store over in Wallowa County — it’s only about two hours east of Meacham!
