From shopping at Meier & Frank’s during Christmas time to finding the best bargains at Woolworth’s, shopping just isn’t the same anymore. Let’s see how many of these stores you remember:
Founded in Portland in 1857, Meier & Frank started as a small dry goods store and grew to become one of the leading department stores on the west coast. Many Oregonians probably have fond memories of visiting the store's Santaland and riding the monorail at Christmas time. Meier & Frank was acquired by Macy's in 2006.
The great thing about Woolworth's was that it sold everything you could ever possibly need or want. This discount department store chain was once one of the largest chains in the world. The pictured Woolworth sign still stands at the historic Medford location, even though the store closed its doors back in 1988.

For over 66 years, Kennedy's was a staple in the Baker City community. This family-owned store was the place to go for candy and ice-cold soda. The store closed its doors in 2013.

It's hard to believe, but back in the day people actually had to rent movies from a store. One of the most popular movie rental chains of yesteryear was Hollywood Video. The first store opened in Portland in 1985, and later opened stores across Washington, California, Nevada, and Texas. Unfortunately, Hollywood Video couldn't survive the rise of Netflix and other streaming services, and went bankrupt in 2010.
If you grew up in Oregon, you probably remember shopping at Montgomery Ward. This popular chain thrived for over a century before going under in 2001. The Grants Pass location in the 1960s is pictured above.
This beloved grocery store served Washington County for eight decades. Located in downtown Hillsboro, Hank's was the place to go for friendly customer service and local products. It closed in 2015.
Pictured is the Emporium store in Ontario, Oregon. Also known as Troutman's Emporium, this chain of department stores was founded in 1955 in North Bend, Oregon. At one point, there were 34 stores operating in Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Idaho, and California. The last store location closed in 2003.
