You’ll Want To Spend All Day At This Waterfall-Fed Pool In Oregon

There’s no better way to cool off on a hot summer day than by splashing around in one of Oregon’s swimming holes, and when you find one with a waterfall, it’s downright delightful. Here’s a gorgeous spot along the Deschutes River that you have to find this summer.
If you live in Central Oregon, the Deschutes River likely has a special place in your heart.
This rugged, wild river winds through the Cascade Mountains as it makes its way north to meet up with the mighty Columbia. Along its 252-mile journey, it provides excellent fly fishing, scenic views, and one of Oregon's many beautiful waterfalls that you'll want to visit.
Steelhead Falls can be a bit tricky to find, but don't let that deter you - this is a stunning hidden gem that's well worth your time.
The falls are located north of Terrebonne. The BLM manages this land and has installed signage in the last few years to make the trailhead a little easier to find. Check out the BLM brochure for exact directions. Park in the small parking lot on River Road, where the trailhead begins.

The trail to Steelhead Falls is just a half-mile long, and it's a fairly easy hike.
As with any hike in Oregon's wilderness, make sure you're prepared before you start out. Bring along plenty of water and wear sturdy hiking shoes to navigate the narrow, sometimes slippery, trail. You'll encounter a short, steep descent going in (that you'll have to climb up on your way out). You may find hiking poles helpful here!

The trail follows the river, providing plenty of scenic beauty during the 10-15 minute hike.
The waterfall plunges 20 feet into the pool below, and the effect is stunning. Some visitors jump off the cliffs next to the falls right into the pool, but use extreme caution if you try this. People have been seriously injured in the past, and the climb back up to the top is dangerous as well.
Once you've gotten your fill of the views, make your way down the river just a bit, where you'll find a popular swimming hole.
Make sure to pack out what you pack in, and leave the trail and river clean for the next visitors. You can camp overnight in this area, but campfires are restricted during the summer. Check with the BLM Prineville District Office (541-416-6700) if you have questions or concerns before your visit.
