Here in Oregon, we’re no strangers to outdoor adventure. In fact, enjoying the great outdoors is a vital part of living here. Yet not all outings are created equal. Some are relatively accessible while others are notoriously challenging. If you’re looking for something that may bring you out of your comfort zone, we have just the trail in mind. South Sister Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in Oregon, but it’s by no means an easy one. Here’s what you can expect from this magnificent — and at times harrowing — adventure.
Clocking in at 12.2 miles, South Sister Trail is an all-day adventure located within the Three Sisters Wilderness.
South Sister is the tallest of the Three Sisters Range and is also the third-tallest peak in Oregon. Those who embark on this lengthy hike should prepare for an intense and, at times, stomach-dropping elevation gain.
In fact, over the course of just 4.9 miles on your way up, you'll have gained 4,900 feet in elevation! In order to prepare for this hike, pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and food. Also, remember to take frequent breaks as needed.
Despite the intense elevation gain and strenuous uphill climb, those who have completed this hike agree that the view from the summit is well worth the challenge.
Have you hiked South Sister Trail before? What was your experience like? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below! If you’re looking for beautiful scenery and a less harrowing trek, check out this short and sweet hike in Oregon you’ll love.
