Downtown is great for walking, but if you want to head outside of the city center, these 10 streets can’t be beat for walkability. Loaded with shops, restaurants and entertainment, you should spend some time cozying up to the fun in one of these great neighborhood spots.
1. Alberta Arts District
One of the most well-known walking streets in the city, Alberta is home to Last Thursdays and the Alberta Street Fair. Last Thursdays, a monthly event that takes place from 15th through 30th Avenues highlights artists, musicians and performers and is one of the largest art events in the city. Any other time, there are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars to keep you busy on this lively stretch of street.
2. NE Mississippi Street
Similar in quirkiness to Alberta, Mississippi Street is a destination of walkability. Situated in the Boise neighborhood, there are shops galore, and if you walk a little further, Vancouver and Williams offer plenty of hip boutiques and breweries to peruse.
3. Alphabet District on NW 23rd Street
For boutique shopping, this lovely quaint street can't be beat. Whether you want to dine on the sidewalk or window shop, there is something for everyone on these tree-lined streets teeming with trendy shops and food.
4. Montavilla District on Stark Street
A smaller district than others, this strip on Stark Street sits directly east of Mt Tabor. Choose from a variety of great restaurants, pop into a few shops, and take in a movie at the discount Academy Theater.
5. Hawthorne Street
Hawthorne is a vintage lovers paradise, while the neighboring Belmont offers boutique shops. Combine the two streets, collectively known as Sunnyside, for a fun afternoon of people watching and shopping.
6. SE Division and Clinton Streets
Geared towards the local community, this shopping district is nestled in a densely populated residential area. Teeming with restaurants, tea and coffee shops, boutiques and gift shops, this off-the-beaten path district is a great place to purchase some Portland wares.
7. Sellwood/Moreland
Head over to the family-friendly Sellwood neighborhood for lovely walking streets loaded with restaurants, coffee shops and boutiques. When you are done shopping and eating, a large park, pool and public library make it worth spending plenty of time here.
8. NE Broadway
In Irvington, Broadway is the center of business happenings. Loaded with restaurants, shops, and more, this district is worth a walkthrough for its reasonably priced food and specialty shops like Twisted, Furever Pets and Pets on Broadway.
9. Hollywood District
Located right on Sandy Boulevard, this district has Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, plenty of shops, a farmers market, and at its center, the Hollywood Theater.
10. E Burnside
Situated in the Buckman neighborhood, Burnside is the center of walkability. The Doug Fir is a centerpiece in the neighborhood and a great place for a drinks and a show. But both sides of the street have a growing number of restaurants and boutiques, including Cuddle Up To Me, the shop where you can pay for some platonic cuddling on your walkabout.
