If you want to have a staycation that will give you chills, book a visit to McMenamins Edgefield, located at the former site of the Multnomah County Poor House. With many reports of scary sightings in the halls, rooms and grounds, this is one house that is not for the weak of heart.
Built in 1911, the stately house originally provided a home for over 200 residents at its start and had a 300+ acre farming operation on premise.
In 1934 an infirmary wing was added to the house to help care for the aging population in the home and the number of residents swelled to over 600.
By the 1950s, the farming operations on the land had ceased, and the home became a nursing home and center for emotionally disturbed children.
By 1972, the home began to fall into disrepair and the county proposed shutting it down. By the 80s, the Troutdale Historical Society lobbied to preserve the home, and in 1990 ii was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
That same year, McMenamins bought the property and began the process of restoring it to its former glory.
Because death was commonplace in poor houses, it is not surprising that many of the former residents of the home are buried in unmarked graves on the property.
Over the years, guests have reported many strange occurrences when staying in the beautifully restored home that now serves as a hotel, restaurant, bar and concert venue.
Many people have reported hearing a woman reciting nursery rhymes, as well as the unnerving crying and wailing from a child's voice in the hallways.
Guests have also reported seeing a ghostly woman dressed in all white roaming the property. Room 215 is said to be particularly haunted, and if you like, you can check the guest log at the front desk that logs paranormal activity in the home to really set you on edge.
While many of the secrets of this former poor house will stay in the walls, you never known when you will have a ghostly encounter at this local home packed with history.
