It’s not every bar that makes it into the century club. This one Portland bar and restaurant not only did that, but is also closing on the 140-year mark. Founded in 1879, Huber’s is a Portland tradition that has been serving up its famous specialty drink from its second location for 108 years.
Huber's Cafe was first founded as the Bureau Saloon in 1879 at SW 1st Avenue and Morrison Street. It moved to its present location - 411 S.W. Third Ave - in 1910.
Known for its roasted turkey sandwiches, a popular item from the restaurant and bar's early saloon days, today Huber's also serves up an impressive array of seafood and steaks.
The beautiful dining room, which Huber's moved into in 1910, is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Exquisite mahogany paneling and stained glass skylights make the spot a delight any time you stop in.
Known for its Spanish Coffee, Huber's delivers on service with this impressive flaming drink.
Bartenders pour the flaming drink table side, and it worth it for the spectacle alone.
Huber's Spanish Coffee contains Bacardi 151 rum, Bols Triple Sec, Kahlua, coffee, fresh whipped cream and nutmeg on top.
While it has been rumored that Huber's invented the drink (unfortunately untrue), it is no less fun to enjoy watching the skilled bartenders pour coffee at your table or the bar.
While they may not have invented the drink, they sure make a lot of them. Today Huber's is the largest user of Kahlua by an independent restaurant in the United States.
In the end, this fanciful drink is great with dessert...
On ice...
Or alongside some of Huber's delicious food offerings.
Turkey sandwiches are still on the menu, along with a whole host of seafood, pork, pasta, turkey, and steak selections.
You can never go wrong with a Buffalo Burger either.
They also make tasty crab cakes, clam chowder, and steamed mussels and clams.
If you want a truly memorable experience enjoying old-time Portland, Huber's is a must-stop spot.
Whether you order their famed drink or your special favorite, you're not going to find an older bar in Portland.
