Enjoying nature is part of our makeup here in Portland, and this natural waterslide is another winning way to do just that. Take this awesome day trip to the Opal Creek Scenic Recreation Area to experience this one-of-a-kind natural waterslide just perfect for a day in the sun.
The Opal Creek Trail is a wonderful hike through an ancient forest and follows closely along the Opal Creek.
Around every turn you will take in the beauty of the blue-tinted natural creek that looks majestic in just about any light.
This 7-mile round trip journey will give you glimpses of some of the oldest trees in the area (some range from 500 to 1,000 years old!), and in the end, you will arrive at Opal Pool.
The amazing blue water is perfect for swimming, and with several smaller pools you will be able to find a perfect spot to cool off.
While this mid-level hike will be tiring, what comes next may be re-energizing.
A perfectly carved into rock natural waterslide is hiding along the creek just for your sliding fun. Located just up the creek from Merten Mill and the bridge with a sign directing you to the Opal Creek Trail, you can have a sliding adventure on your way to the pools, on your way back, or both.
After all the work it took to get here, a serious sense of accomplishment will accompany your journey down the slide.
For a truly adventurous day, this is one not to miss. A Northwest Forest Pass is needed for parking at the trailhead, and parking spots fill up quickly on hot days. Consider carpooling and get there early to make the most of the day in this amazing spot.
To get to Opal Creek Trailhead, follow North Fork Road off of OR-22.
