For two weeks, Portland’s Lan Su Chinese Garden will host one of the biggest Chinese New Year Festivals in town. This fun event features a variety of entertainment — including lion dances, martial arts presentations, and cultural performances — and will welcome in the Year of the Dog. The family-friendly event is a wonderful experience for locals and visitors alike, and a great way to learn more about the festive celebration.
Lion dances are a featured event at the celebration, and should be included on your must-see agenda.
Thought to ward off evil and bring good fortune, lion dances have been performed in China for more than 2,000 years.
Accompanied by a drum, gong and symbols, the lion dance is a high-energy event that you are not going to want to miss.
Lion Dances take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays throughout the festival.
There are plenty of fun activities for the whole family at the festival.
Kids are invited to make a Year of the Dog ornament and there will be Chinese folk art and martial arts demonstrations throughout the event.
Visitors will have the opportunity to hang their wishes on the wishing tree in hope that good fortune will allow their wishes to stick.
Another highlight of the festival is the Lantern Viewing.
Lantern Viewing closes out traditional Chinese New Year Festivals and on the final two weekends festival, this beautiful tradition is featured.
This traditional event illuminates the garden with red glowing lanterns.
The lights reflecting on the lake are an incredible sight.
The Lantern Viewing ends with a lively illuminated dragon procession, which is a must-see.
The Chinese New Year Festival takes place from Friday, February 16 and through Sunday, March 4, 2018.
All events are included in admission price to the garden, with the exception of the Lantern Viewing Ceremony.
Admission to the garden is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $7 for students, and children under 5 are free.
