The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument is a true natural gem in east-central Oregon. Its 13,944 acres are divided into three units: Sheep Rock, Clarno, and Painted Hills.

The Painted Hills Unit encompasses 3,132 acres, and it looks like something from another world. The vibrant colors come from red ash that was disbursed when volcanos in the area erupted 44 million years ago.
