Oregonians have a lot to be thankful for. From the diverse natural beauty that can be found all across our state to the bountiful locally produced food and drink options we have at our fingertips, there are plenty of things here in Oregon that we have the privilege of that no one else can claim. Take a look:
1. Crater Lake
Oregon's natural beauty is truly worth bragging about, and Crater Lake is one of our crowning glories. As the deepest lake in the United States, there's just no other state that has this type of treasure. Crater Lake is famous for its epically clear blue water, which is some of the purest in the world. This comes from the fact that the lake exists in the volcanic caldera of Mount Mazama with no contamination or pollutants introduced from flowing rivers or tributaries.
2. The most craft breweries per capita in the country.
Our epic craft beer scene is one of the many perks that come with living in Oregon. There are over 260 breweries across over 70 cities and towns, making it easy to find a beer to please any taste buds. Cheers!
3. Multnomah Falls
Waterfalls as magnificent and wondrous as Multnomah Falls are not commonplace in all 50 states. This 611-foot tall waterfall attracts over two million tourists every year to stand in awe of its mind-blowing beauty, making it the most-visited natural site in the Pacific Northwest. Oregonians experienced quite a scare in 2017 when a raging forest fire threatened both the falls and the historic Multnomah Falls Lodge, which was opened in 1925; thankfully, firefighters were able to protect and save the structure and preserve this natural treasure.
4. No sales tax
One of the more practical privileges about life in Oregon is our lack of sales tax. Shopping sprees are a bit more fun when the price tag you see in the store is the price you end up paying. (To be fair, we do end up paying more in property taxes to make up for it.)
5. The Oregon Coast
Living close to the Oregon Coast is a privilege that few people get to experience. This famous stretch of coastline is completely open to the public and filled with enchanting sights and exciting events, like Lincoln City's annual kite festival.
6. Diverse landscapes
One of the best parts about Oregon life is the variety of diverse landscapes that can be found all across the state. From lush forests and rugged coastlines, to dry high deserts and snow-capped mountains, there's no end to the natural diversity here.
7. The Oregon Shakespeare Festival
The annual Shakespeare festival in Ashland is the largest non-profit professional theater group in the United States. Every year, they put on a variety of historical Shakespeare plays, along with other contemporary shows.
8. Fresh marionberry pie
Oregon's marionberry mania began in the 1950s when this hybrid blackberry was developed in an Oregon State University lab. About 28 to 33 millions pounds of marionberries are produced each year (it's the most common blackberry variety grown in the state), and most of them are gobbled up by Oregonians, often in the form of delightful desserts. This beloved berry is a local staple that the rest of the country rarely gets to experience.
