Oregon is a place of untold wonder. There are amazing natural wonders everywhere you turn — often where you’d least expect them. Take the high desert town of Lakeview, Oregon, for example. This underrated place is home to a big, 200-foot secret that’s almost too extraordinary to be real. Curious? Let’s explore…
Welcome to Lakeview, Oregon, a charming small town located in the high desert region of the state.
This is Old Perpetual, a 200-foot tall geyser that's been continuously erupting for nearly a century. It's Oregon's only continuously erupting geyser, and Lakeview's pride and joy.
Hunter's Hot Springs were discovered in 1832 by trappers from the Hudson's Bay Company, who noted in their travel logs that the water in the area was "unbearably hot."
A century later, in 1923, land developer Harry Hunter purchased the springs; the geyser was discovered while Hunter was developing the area into a natural resort.
Since then, Old Perpetual has erupted almost in perpetuity; the geyser seemed to slow in the early 2000s, but since 2015, this natural fountain has resumed its run, giving visitors to the area a spectacular show.
The southern high desert region of Oregon is a place of beauty and wonder, and Old Perpetual is just another reason to explore this fascinating landscape.
Did you know Lakeview was home to the only continuously spouting geyser in Oregon? Have you visited this natural wonder before? It really is a place that belongs on your Oregon bucket list!
