Portland, Oregon is a long way from Coney Island, New York. About 2,913 miles, to be exact. That’s a long drive – probably much too far to go to get a Coney Dog. Luckily, the oldest hot dog stand in Oregon has legit Coney Dogs, and it’s still open after more than 80 years. Take a look!
Nick's Famous Coney Island opened its doors in 1935, and it's been serving up delicious dogs and burgers ever since.
You'll find it at 3746 SE Hawthorne Blvd., Portland, OR 97214.
Nick Carlacio opened his restaurant with an original Coney Dog recipe that's still used today. He ran the restaurant until 1960, when Frank Nudo purchased it and kept it going for nearly 50 years before the current owners, Casey and Carrie Hogrefe purchased it in 2008.
When it opened, this little shop on Hawthorne quickly became a popular spot for a drink and a dog after a long workday. The neighborhood has gone through many changes over the years, but it's still the same hangout.
Customers can still sit up at the original bar stools to enjoy a beer and a Coney Dog, but they'll have a few more menu items to choose from, such as sliders, hummus, and fish & chips.
The Coney Island is still the best item on the menu. Get a single, double, triple, or home run - the savory, eight-inch franks are placed on a local Alessio Bakery bun, then topped with delicious chili and onions.
We can't imagine that anyone could not be in the mood for a hot dog, but if that's the case, you can always get a delicious hamburger here. The burgers are made with 100% ground chuck.
Stop by Nick's seven days a week. It opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; 11 a.m. on weekdays, and some nights it's open as late as 2:30 a.m., in case you're craving a Coney Dog in the middle of the night!
