Why in the world would you ever settle for a boring, national-chain hotel in Oregon when you can stay at a McMenamins Hotel? The Beaver State is home to eight of these gems, and each one has unique features that you aren’t likely to find elsewhere.
1. Crystal Hotel - An Underground Warm-Water Soaking Pool
You'll find McMenamins Crystal Hotel in the Pearl District of Portland, and it's a pretty little gem. The flatiron building is more than 100 years old, and you'll find a beautiful soaking pool just below street level.
The 72 acres of farmland that Edgefield sits on was once used as the county's poor farm. Today, it houses a main building with more than 100 guest rooms, extensive gardens, a restaurant, a golf course, spa and salon, and even a movie theater.
Edgefield isn't the only McMenamins property to include a golf course - the Gearhart Hotel sits right next door to Gearhart Links - an 18-hole course that was built way back in 1892. You can also play virtual golf at The Swingers Lounge Golf and Fitness Center, and practice your putting on a new 20,000-square-foot green.
Maybe you're not a golfer, but you love disc golf. You might be surprised to see a course right here at Grand Lodge, but you'll also have a blast playing on it! You'll also enjoy the movie theater, restaurants, and soaking pool here.
Hotel Oregon was built back in 1905, and it's just as charming as ever. At this property, you'll find a bar in the cellar, and one on the roof! Make your way up, and enjoy some stunning views.
6. Kennedy School - A Nostalgia For Elementary School
Kennedy School was a beloved elementary school for years. It opened its doors in 1915, and now its a beautiful 57-room hotel. Don't worry - it's kept much of its school days charm. You'll feel like you've gone back to second grade as you roam the halls here.
7. Old St. Francis School - A Stunning Art Deco Pool
The McMenamins properties are well-known for their cool soaking pools, and the one at Old St. Francis School is no exception. Check out this art-deco pool with its murals and stained-glass window.
White Eagle Saloon has been a popular spot for rock 'n roll since its earliest days, and the tradition continues. There are just 11 guest rooms here, but you might not get much sleep, because there's also nightly live music!
