If you’re looking for a beautiful place to paddle a canoe or kayak in Oregon, then you’ll love Hosmer Lake. This lake is under an hour from Bend but you’ll feel like you’re a million miles from everything. You’ll find this spectacular lake in the Deschutes National Forest and it’s one of the best places for paddling in Oregon. Read on to learn more about it so you can start planning your visit!
Hosmer Lake is incredible! This 198-acre lake is at 4,964 feet of elevation and offers breathtaking views of Mount Bachelor, South Sisters, and Broken Top. The lake used to be called Mud Lake, but in 1962 it was changed to its current name to honor Paul Hosmer, a naturalist from Bend.
This means it's very still and is great for paddling. You'll be able to see the bottom almost everywhere you go. When you look down you'll be able too see many aquatic plants and fish like Atlantic salmon, brook trout, and rainbow trout.
This lake is also home to abundant wildlife. Because this lake only allows paddlers and boats with electric motors, it's quiet and serene for both the visitors and the animals.
The only type of fishing that's allowed here is fly fishing. Any salmon you catch must be released. Still, this lake is well-stocked with fish and you'll probably catch something if you try.
