I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Oregon foodies: rejoice! The High Desert Food & Farm Alliance recently launched the High Desert Food Trail, Central Oregon’s first official food trail, and it’s a must for all Beaver State gourmands. Featuring some of the best farms, vineyards, restaurants, and food carts in the state, the new High Desert Food Trail is an immersive experience sure to give you a newfound appreciation for the bounty of the Beaver State.
The desert gets a bad rap. The dry, barren, beige wastelands that folks typically associate with a desert are nothing like the high desert region of Central Oregon.
Oregon's high desert begins at the eastern foot of the Cascades, and spans much of the central, eastern, and southern parts of the state. As such, most of Central Oregon is actually considered “high desert," so named for its high elevation (much of the region sits at 4,000 feet above sea level and higher).
Just like the deserts of the Southwest, Oregon's deserts experience dramatic temperature fluctuations, oscillating as much as 60 degrees in the span of a single day! But it's within this landscape that many of Oregon's best crops thrive.
The High Desert Food & Farm Alliance has put together a self-guided adventure through Central Oregon to help locals and visitors alike experience the culinary and agritourism opportunities that make this region so unique -- and bountiful.
The trail features 45 unique businesses in the region, including farms, ranches, restaurants, farmers markets, craft and beverage makers, and more. A full map can be found here.
While Central Oregon's culinary scene is gaining the attention and respect it deserves, the High Desert Food Trail is another way to highlight the hard-working farmers and businesses that are essential in Oregon's burgeoning culinary prowess.
