The Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the most photographed places in all of Oregon. It’s no wonder – it’s beautiful. However, many people don’t know that it’s one of the most haunted places in Oregon, too. This haunted lighthouse in Oregon is attractive to both history buffs and ghost hunters, and you can even stay there overnight in the lighthouse keeper’s home. Today, it’s a bed and breakfast, and people come from all over Oregon, the nation, and the world to experience this special and eerie place. Read on to learn more about it.
The Heceta Head Lighthouse is perched on a cliff on the Oregon coast, 13 miles north of Florence and 13 miles south of Yachats.
This beautiful lighthouse was built in 1892 to warn ships that they were approaching the rocky Oregon coast. It's 56 feet tall and its beam can be seen for 21 nautical miles.
It cost $80,000 to build at the time. The completed project included the lighthouse, homes for the lighthouse keeper and two assistant lighthouse keepers, a barn, and two kerosene storage buildings.
For 125 years, lighthouse keepers and their families lived on the property to keep the lighthouse lit. It was automated in 1963 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Today, the keepers' quarters is a bed and breakfast that is maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. You can stay overnight in one of the rooms. The entire home is decorated with historic furnishings and decor.
The people who work at this bed and breakfast believe it to be haunted by the wife of one of the lighthouse keepers. Legend has it that none of her children drowned, either in the cistern or in the ocean. Her spirit remains on the property, always in search of her lost child. Sometimes the staff will make the beds, but an indentation will appear as though she is sitting on it.
A group of Lane Community College students once tried to communicate with her using a Ouija board. When they asked her name, she spelled out "Rue," so that's what they call her.
One guest said she once saw Rue's spirit float down the hallway and depart out the front door. Rue never does anything evil, but the bed and breakfast's management said sometimes things fly off shelves. Sometimes they hear footsteps or whispers at night, even when there are no guests onsite.
This haunted lighthouse in Oregon is special and unique in many ways. If you want to view a historic lighthouse and possibly encounter a ghost, the Heceta Head Lighthouse Bed & Breakfast should be on your bucket list!
