These 7 Deadly Prisons Can Only Be Found In Oregon

Opened in 1851, this prison is the only maximum security prison in the state. OSP has had a tumultuous history over the years, with many documented accounts of escapes and riots. In 1951, inmates attempted a mass escape after receiving weapons from a sympathetic guard. Their plan was spoiled by an informant, John Edward Ralph, who was quickly transferred to another prison for his own security.

Many notorious inmates have resided here, including serial killer Dayton Leroy Rogers, Bradly Morris Cunningham (the subject of crime writer Ann Rule's book Dead by Sunset), Bobby Jack Fowler (connected to the Highway of Tears murders), the "Happy Face Killer", and Christian Longo.

Originally intended to be a long-term hospital for mental patients at the time of its construction in 1913, this facility was not converted into a prison until 1983. It is now the third-largest prison in Oregon. While it is a medium security facility, deadly events have still occurred here. In 2014, after a series of inmate brawls rocked the prison, eventually leading to a three-day lockdown. That same year, a corrections officer shot and killed an inmate after he would not stop attacking another prisoner.

This medium security prison is the largest correctional institution in Oregon. More than 2,000 inmates live in cellblocks here, with roughly 180 in a dormitory-style minimum-security facility. One of the most infamous inmates is Ward Weaver, who is currently serving two life sentences for the murder of two Oregon City girls.

MacLaren incarcerates males between the ages of 13 and 25 for crimes ranging from assault, sex offenses, and murder. It earns a spot on this list due in part to one notorious inmate: Kip Kinkel. In 1998 a 15-year-old Kinkel murdered his parents and two of his fellow students at Thurston High School in Springfield. Kinkel was later moved to Oregon State Correctional Institution in 2007.

Coffee Creek is a prisoner intake center and the only women's prison in Oregon. All prisoners in the state start their time here. It is also where Oregon's female death row inmates are held. Recently, the prison has been under fire after several inmates accused a guard of sexual assault.

Another medium security facility, Sheridan was Oregon's first federal prison. The serial bank robber Leslie Rogge is currently serving time here. Other famous inmates who once called Sheridan home include Tre Arrow, a member of the Earth Liberation Front convicted of arson, as well as Tom Anderson and Pete Kott, both former members of the Alaska House of Representatives convicted of extortion, bribery, and money laundering.

This large medium and minimum security prison is home to over 1,800 inmates. In the past year, there have been at least five reports of inmates unexpectedly dying in this facility.
