Salt Plains State Park in Jet is a unique wonder of nature. It's a vast, open desolate landscape that feels like you've stepped into outer space — and the selenite crystal digging area makes it even more special. This barren yet awe-inspiring setting creates a surreal feeling that’s hard to find anywhere else on Earth.
If you want to get your hands dirty during your visit, you can take part in the park’s selenite crystal digging activity. While you won’t find any precious gems here, you will discover a variety of interesting rocks and minerals that are sure to fascinate you. Plus, if you’re lucky enough, you might just find some pieces of selenite.
The selenite crystals found in Salt Plains State Park are truly unique. From April 1 to October 15, you can experience the unique thrill of crystal digging in the salt plains. Just below the surface you’ll find these amazing crystals, usually in an hourglass shape. And best of all, Oklahoma is the only place on Earth where you can find this special selenite crystal formed like an hourglass.
The area looks like an alien planet, with flat land of white salt crystals stretching out as far as the eye can see. There are no plants or trees here in the digging area – just miles of sparkling terrain under an endless blue sky.
In addition to its breathtaking scenery and crystal hunting opportunities, Salt Plains State Park has a few other surprises up its sleeve. It also houses a saltwater lake that is one-quarter as salty as the ocean.
