Spring is in the air, and it’s time to get off the couch and see some of Oklahoma’s most beautiful scenery. Hop in the car and take a journey on this scenic byway.
The Talimena National Scenic Byway stretches 54 miles from Talihina, Oklahoma, all the way across the border to Mena, Arkansas.
Before you head out on your journey, make sure your vehicle has plenty of gas, and that you have some snacks and water with you. You'll find plenty of natural beauty along the way, but you won't find a gas station, and there are only a few stops with drinking water available.
You can drive the entire byway in just one hour and 10 minute...but why would you do that? You'll want to plan on spending several hours so that you can make stops along the way to truly appreciate the natural wonders this byway has to offer.
The Kerr Nature Center is just one of many attractions that you'll want to explore. Take one of the three short trails to see some of the Ouachita National Forest's most gorgeous scenery.
This scenic byway is popular year-round; you'll enjoy blue skies and a verdant, green landscape in the spring and summer, rich autumn hues in the fall, and a winter wonderland when it snows.
For more information, and a complete listing of all the vistas and attractions along the byway, check out this brochure offered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. If you’re looking for more springtime fun in Oklahoma, take this easy wildflower hike!
