One easy way to spot a true Oklahoman is to simply listen to how they pronounce certain city names. Can they pronounce Ouachita (pronounced wash-i-tah) correctly? Some Oklahomans who have been here their whole lives, even have trouble with some of the names on this list. See how many you can get right…it might be harder than you think.
Miami, Oklahoma, pronounced "My-am-uh," is located on historic Route 66 in northeast Oklahoma. Spelled the same as the Florida city but does not sound the same.
Oologah, pronounced "oo'-la-gawh" is probably most known for being the birthplace of Will Rogers. It is also known for being repeatedly mispronounced.

Ouachita "WAH-shi-tah" has as many pronunciations as it does beautiful views. Located in south eastern Oklahoma it truly is an amazing place to visit.

Tahlequah "Tah-le-quah" is located in beautiful northeast Oklahoma. Besides having a thriving university, Northeastern State University, it is also the capital of the Cherokee Nation.
