I’ve lived in Oklahoma for over 30 years and it’s funny to me, being that we live in tornado alley, how many long-time residents don’t know we have a museum (and practically a whole town) dedicated to the Blockbuster movie Twister. I mean, I thought that was a known fact here in the Sooner State. For those that are in the dark about this very important fact, located in the small town of Wakita is Twister The Movie Museum, dedicated to preserving the memories and items of the popular 1996 movie, starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt.
Keep scrolling and I’ll show you some of the cool things you’ll find at Twister The Movie Museum in Wakita, Oklahoma that pay homage to the movie. And, for all you die-hard Oklahoma history fans that already knew this, kudos to you for knowing some of your state’s fun facts!
If you’re looking for a fun road trip destination, Wakita, Oklahoma should be at the top of your list. Nestled in the northwestern corner of the state and home to only 292 people, this small town is worth visiting—especially if you’re a fan of the 1996 classic film Twister.
The movie was actually filmed here in Wakita—so it makes sense that the town is now home to the Twister Movie Museum. The museum showcases memorabilia from the movie and offers visitors an opportunity to relive some of their favorite scenes.
As soon as you step inside the museum, you'll feel like you've been transported back to the '90s. The walls are adorned with movie posters and stills from the film, and you'll even find some props used in the movie on display.
One of the main attractions at the museum is the replica of Dorothy, the device used in the movie to measure the strength of a tornado. Visitors can pose with Dorothy and take a picture with her as a souvenir.
You can take a stroll through the streets and admire the charming houses, many of which are decorated with wind turbines, a nod to the town's role in the movie. And, you'll find a plaque dedicated to the spot where Aunt Meg's house was located in the movie.
You also might spot Dorothy making her way to other towns in the state. She travels to weather-related events so if you spot her on the road, give her a honk and let her know you're cheering her on. Whether you’re looking for a day trip adventure or just want to relive one of your favorite movies from childhood, Wakita is guaranteed to have something for everyone.
