Oklahoma has one of the most diverse topographies in all the country. It’s a beautiful sight to see when these topographies overlap, which is the case in a section of the Panhandle. There’s a hike that takes you to the top of a mountain where you can look out for miles and miles and admire the prairies of Oklahoma while standing atop a mountain made of selenite. Keep scrolling to see where this beautiful hike is located.
The Gloss Mountains are some of Oklahoma’s most unique jewels, and there's a hike that takes you right to the rim of Cathedral Mountain, where you’ll get a view of some awe-inspiring scenery.
It's located inside Gloss Mountain State Park in Major County, near the city of Fairview. It's open 365 days a year for hiking, from sunrise to sunset.
There's just one trail at this state park, but it's one you won't want to miss. You'll see the paved trail very clearly from the parking lot — it's just past the pavilion.
The trail is short — just 1.2 miles — but it's considered moderate because of the 150 ft. elevation change. The only strenuous portion of the hike is the staircase that leads to the top.
Once you're on top of the world, walk around the plateau and enjoy the magnificent views in every direction. Across the way, you'll see Lone Peak Mountain displaying its vibrant red color.
One of the most spectacular things about Gloss Mountain is its shiny glass exterior from the high selenite content in the mountains. When the sun hits, it shines and looks glossy (hence the name).
At the top of the bluff, you'll find several forks branching out to various lookout points. These are great spots to sit and enjoy the view and snap a few pics.
