While the Sooner State may not have an ocean or a towering mountain range, there is one hidden gem tucked away in its borders that will make you do a double take: Little Niagara. Though it can’t quite compare to Niagara Falls in New York or Canada, Little Niagara Falls in Oklahoma is still a delight for outdoor enthusiasts looking for an adventure.
Little Niagara is located within Chickasaw National Recreation Area in Sulphur, Oklahoma. The area itself offers plenty of outdoor activities - from fishing to camping - but it's Little Niagara that really stands out.
This miniature version of its famous namesake rivals any other waterfall you've seen before - but not for its size. It's a smaller waterfall but its beauty is unmatched.
The falls are made up of three small tiers cascading over rocks and into an emerald-green pond below. But don't let their size fool you - these falls are mighty in their own way.
The crystal blue water makes for a popular swimming hole in the summer months. The water temperature is between 62-64 degrees year-round so it's very refreshing when Oklahoma gets over 100 degrees.
But Little Niagara isn't the only thing to see at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. This park is home to a wide variety of natural springs, including some that are sulphur.
In addition to the springs, the Chickasaw National Recreation Area boasts some incredible hiking trails that wind through forests, past waterfalls, and over bridges. This park is truly a nature lover's paradise, with something for everyone to enjoy.
The next time you find yourself looking to enjoy nature, be sure to visit Little Niagara and the Chickasaw National Recreation Area. And who knows, you might just discover your new favorite natural wonder.
