Ashley has lived in Oklahoma for 30 years and is the Oklahoma staff writer for onlyinyourstate.com. When she isn't writing about Oklahoma, she enjoys visiting the beach and exploring new areas.
If you head to far northwestern Oklahoma to an area known as the “Panhandle” you’ll soon discover Black Mesa State Park. It’s home to the most unique topography in the state and is absolutely gorgeous. If you need to clear your head and get away from city life, take a trip to this park that’s literally in the middle of nowhere to enjoy the most serene place in the Sooner State.
Black Mesa is one of the most unique areas to visit in Oklahoma because of its dramatic landscape. It’s not only the highest point in the state at 4,973 feet, but it has some of the most unique and spectacular topography in the Sooner State.
From rugged rock formations to layers of black lava to hidden caves, Black Mesa is one place that must be seen to be believed. It's located in the western Panhandle region and borders Colorado and New Mexico.
Visitors to Black Mesa can hike to the top of the plateau. The hike is 4.2 miles each way and is considered a moderately strenuous hike. It takes about 4 hours but the views are worth the trek.
The sunsets and night sky are magical. Black Mesa is known for some of the darkest skies in the country. Astronomers come from all over the country to view meteor showers and for star gazing.
Black Mesa is named from the layer of black lava rock that coated the mesas from years ago. Black Mesa continues to be a magnificent Oklahoma destination with its long history, Wild West, wildlife, and an untouched natural environment.
Lucky for us, the Sooner State has many retreats and hidden getaways that are perfect to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. One of my favorite places to go for a relaxing weekend is in southern Oklahoma to the charming resort town of Medicine Park at the base of the Wichita Mountains.
