After college, she chose to trade in her winter boots for slippahs and moved to the beautiful island of Oahu, where she has been living for more than five years. She lives on the west side but is constantly taking mini-road trips across the island and visits the neighboring islands whenever she can getaway. She loves hiking, snorkeling, locally-grown coffee, and finding the best acai bowl on Oahu.
The United States of America is no stranger to remote and beautiful destinations, and Oklahoma is no exception. Located near the New Mexico border at the tip of the Panhandle nearly six hours from Oklahoma City is Black Mesa State Park. Marking the meeting point between the Rocky Mountains and the shortgrass prairie, this is easily one of Oklahoma’s most remote state parks, and we can’t get enough. Found within this state park is the often overlooked Lake Carl Etling, an off-the-beaten-path spot we’d love to share with you today.
The gorgeous Black Mesa State Park covers approximately 349 acres, and you’ll find another 1,600 acres of protected nature preserve right next door. You could spend an entire day exploring and hiking here, but our favorite activities take place at Carl Etling Lake.
And if you love fishing, you’re in for a real treat. Featuring two boat ramps and a winter trout fishery as well as a substantial population of largemouth bass, flathead catfish, walleye, and smallmouth bass, there’s no better place to spend a day on the water.
After a day spent exploring, settle in at the Black Mesa State Park Campground, nestled on the banks of Lake Carl Etling. Here, you will find 35 tent sites and 29 RV sites. Be sure to arrive early, though — they're first come, first served.
This little reservoir is about as remote as it gets here in Oklahoma, and there’s truly no better place to get away from it all. The closest town is Kenton, Oklahoma, but with just 17 residents, you won’t find any services here.
So, what are you waiting for? If you want to escape for a day — or a weekend — you won't be disappointed with a trip to Black Mesa State Park's Lake Carl Etling.
Lake Carl Etling is located within Black Mesa State Park & Nature Preserve at State Hwy. 325, Kenton, OK 73946. Have you ever visited this stunning remote lake?
