The Holy City of the Wichitas is tucked away in the Wichita Mountains and looks like an ancient city you would find in Old Jerusalem. For more than 90 years, this site has been home to a long-running passion play where thousands of people have come to see the story of Jesus Christ retold in a creative way in the hills of the Wichita Mountains. Keep scrolling to see this magnificent replica of the holy land right here in the Sooner State.
Holy City of the Wichitas is a 66-acre area in the Wichita Mountains that looks like Israel during Biblical times. You'll know you are there when you see the statue of Jesus off the side of the road.
It's home to the nation's longest-running Easter passion play, "The Prince of Peace." Thousands of visitors come to the play every year and in 1939 attendance reached an all-time high of more than 200,000 visitors.
You'll find locations like Pilate’s Judgment Hall, Herod’s Court, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Lord’s Supper building, and several other towers and walls.
On the grounds of this extraordinary place, you’ll also find a little church that is an absolute work of art. The chapel was built in 1936 and modeled after America’s oldest church, Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia, where George Washington worshiped.
The interior features stained-glass windows, beautiful arches, historic pews, stunning murals, and cozy spaces. Artist, Irene Malcolm, dedicated many years of her life to create Biblical murals and paintings on the ceilings and walls of the chapel.
The buildings in the Holy City, including the chapel, are made out of locally quarried granite and there is a stone that came directly from the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem.
