At the heart of Ponca City’s vibrant landscape lies the Cann Memorial Botanical Gardens, a historical treasure trove tracing its origins back to the early 20th century. Constructed in 1908 by the illustrious Lester and Mary Cann, this captivating 10-acre estate was not only a testament to their prominence in the community but also a reflection of their unwavering dedication to fostering a green haven for future generations. Through the benevolence of their daughter Elsie, the gardens now stand as a living tribute, inviting all to revel in the harmonious blend of history and nature.
The estate and gardens, located at 1500 East Grand Avenue in Ponca City, serve not just as a living testament to the Cann family's legacy but also as an open invitation for all to revel in the timeless allure of Oklahoma's botanical heritage.
Elsie Cann Brown generously bequeathed the property to the city in 1975. Since then, this 10-acre haven has blossomed into a cultural hub, hosting a myriad of enriching events, workshops, and seminars, making it a cornerstone of community engagement and natural appreciation.
The gardens boast an impressive diversity of flora, including a vibrant wisteria arbor, a serene lily pond, and meticulously tended beds of perennials, herbs, and annuals.
More than 70 species of trees, lovingly planted since 1980, contribute to the garden's lush, picturesque landscape, offering a delightful sensory experience for all who visit.
Open to the public seven days a week, the Cann Memorial Botanical Gardens is not just a serene oasis but also a hub of community activity. Visitors can engage with knowledgeable garden staff, available on weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., to learn about the various plant species and the history of the garden.
Moreover, the garden serves as the host for the highly anticipated Ponca City Herb Festival, a vibrant celebration of nature and culture, attracting over 10,000 attendees annually.
While the interior of the historic home may not be open for public tours, the garden grounds and the first floor of the home are available for group rentals, providing a unique setting for special events and gatherings.
