What are some of the best year-round campsites in Oklahoma?
Buzzard’s Roost Campground (Ardmore): Located in the scenic Lake Murray State Park, this is one of Oklahoma's most popular camping destinations. Of course, the 5,728 surface acres of water is the main attraction here offering paddleboarding, rafting, and canoeing. It's also known as a great fishing spot. Sleep in your tent under the stars or haul your RV. Enjoy the fire rings and restrooms with showers.
Buckhorn Campground Loop C (Sulpher): Located in Chickasaw National Recreation Area, this campground is conveniently located next to the pretty Lake of the Arbuckles. The park has four loops with Loops C and D open all year round. Loop C has 41 campsites with two that are handicap accessible and 17 that provide electricity and water. Along with boating, enjoy fishing for perch, bass, and crappie, swimming, and birdwatching. Have a cookout at one of the provided picnic areas complete with grills. In addition, the pavilion is surrounded by a large green space so bring your football or soccer equipment. Watch for the special events that take place at the amphitheater.
Black Mesa State Park (Kenton): RV and tent sites are available at this interesting park. History is deep in this magical place that gets its name from the layer of black lava rock that coated the mesa about 30 million years ago! Hike to the top of the plateau, which is Oklahoma's highest point at 4,973 feet above sea level. Astronomers come in droves due to the darkest nighttime skies on publicly accessible land in the United States, especially in August to see the annual Perseid meteor shower.
