There’s something about being out in nature with no one else around that is so peaceful and relaxing. Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is one of those places that offers a one-of-a-kind experience you can’t find anywhere else. Not only do they have a beautiful, salty lake but they have a digging area that is the only place in the world where you can find hourglass-shaped selenite crystals. The land is barren but there’s something about this place that is absolutely heaven on earth.
Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge is located in Jet and is one of the most unique places in Oklahoma. It's home to a salty lake, a barren landscape, and nature trails.
It's the only place in the world where you can dig for hourglass-shaped selenite crystals. Digging season runs from April until about mid-October and the refuge is open from sunrise to sunset.
You'll be looking for these rare crystals and once you find them you can take them home with you. But there is a restriction...you can only take up to 10 pounds and one large cluster out of the refuge.
The Great Salt Plains Lake is half as salty as the ocean and is open for swimming, boating, fishing, and kayaking. It's another peaceful spot to enjoy the great outdoors.
If you’re looking for a beautiful, easy hike while in the area, check out Eagle Roost Nature Trail, a 1.25-mile loop located in the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.
