As a former U.S. military post, Fort Washita in Durant is full of history and is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a former resident. The fort was built in 1841 as a protection site for the Choctaw and Chickasaw nations against rival tribes. Today, it’s an abandoned historical site that is open to the public for tours and ghost walks. If you’re a history buff or ghost hunter, you’ll love this haunted military post.

Fort Washita Historic Site and Museum is owned by the Oklahoma Historical Society and is managed by the Chickasaw Nation. It's open on select days to the public. Admission is free but donations are accepted.

The fort was abandoned at the start of the American Civil War. By the time the war had ended the Confederates had burned down most of the fort. In 1962 the OK Historical Society bought it from private owners and has been restoring the site over the years.

Located on the grounds is an old Confederate Cemetery where 200 unknown soldiers are buried. The site is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Aunt Jane, a former resident who was buried on the grounds. The whole place is rumored to be actively haunted and you can even take a haunted ghost walk tour to see for yourself.

Also on the grounds are 86 structures, some of which have been rehabilitated for educational and historical purposes.

An officer's quarters are open for viewing so you can get a glimpse of what life was like during the war in the 1800s.
