The First Americans Museum (FAM) just opened in September 2021 after years of funding delays and over three decades of planning. Here, visitors can experience the collective histories of 39 distinctive First American Nations in Oklahoma today. It’s not only educational but the architecture is a sight to behold.
Check it out below:
FAM is located in Oklahoma City, along the Oklahoma River across from downtown at 659 First Americans Boulevard. It serves as a starting point to explore First American attractions throughout the Sooner State.
From the moment you pull up, you will be impressed with the world-class architecture. Every design has a meaning and is worth a read on their website (link at bottom).
The museum is 175,000 sq. ft. and the buildings make up one big circle. You will notice there are no right angles in the building, as they are seen as bad luck, or bringing bad luck.
The Tribal Nations Gallery is a signature exhibition that features works of art, interactive media, and film, and engages guests through sight, sound and touch.
The museum has a partnership with Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. They currently have 135 items on loan from Smithsonian for 10 years.
This museum serves as a dynamic center to promote awareness and educate the public about the unique cultures, diversity, history, contributions, and resilience of the First American Nations in Oklahoma today. It's definitely worth a visit.
If you’re interested in learning more about this world-class museum, please visit their website or Facebook page. Please note, the museum is open every day of the week except for Tuesday.
Another interesting museum to visit is Science Museum Oklahoma. It is rated one of the best museums in the country and once you visit you’ll see why. Click here to read more about it.
