What are some of the best natural wonders to see in Oklahoma?
This natural wonders road trip will take you to several lovely getaways in Oklahoma. The picturesque adventure is a journey of 509 miles offering some places that may be new to you. Here are a few highlights.
Great Salt Plains State Park (Jet): Imagine a place where you can dig for hourglass selenite crystals (a rare and fragile form of selenite). These shimmering pieces are left over from an ocean that once covered this part of the state, and it's the only place in the entire world where people have this unique opportunity. Digging is allowed from sometime in April through October every year. Other fun times include camping, boating, picnicking, hiking, and mountain biking. The 8,690 surface acres with 41 miles of shoreline also make for excellent fishing, swimming, bird- and other wildlife watching. While you explore the scenery, dream of this place once covered in water.
Roman Nose State Park (Watonga): Can you believe this was once a winter campground of the Cheyenne Indian tribe? Overlooking the ancient mesas amid a magical canyon, your imagination will take over trying to visualize what came before. The legendary setting offers an abundance of recreational activities, including a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pools, hiking trails, lakes for trout fishing, miniature golf, canoeing, horse stables, and hayrides to name a few. You can also camp at this resort or stay in the lodge with a full-service restaurant.
Quartz Mountain (Lone Wolf): This lovely destination in Southwest Oklahoma offers a seasonal fun park for all ages, golfing, paddle boating, nature trails, and a 50-acre riding space for four-wheelers during the nicer months. Rent a cabin or one of the 118 rooms in the beautiful lodge, of which six are handicap-accessible, with Western, Native American, or Southwestern themes. You can also enjoy the library, restaurant, lounge, and gift shop. Enjoy a swim any time in the heated indoor swimming pool with a whirlpool. And remember to ask about the Quartz Mountain Flyer excursion train rides!
