I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
Regardless of your religious orientation or beliefs, there’s something undeniably beautiful about a stately old church. These places of worship are often intricately designed with colorful stained glass and stunning architecture, and there are some truly extraordinary churches in Ohio to admire.
Today’s feature destination, however, isn’t just a church to admire from afar — and it’s not a place of worship, either. It’s Urban Artifact, a beautiful brewery in Cincinnati, Ohio, that’s housed in a former Catholic church. It’s a world-class brewery in the most unsuspecting of places, offering a wholly unique, only-in-Ohio experience.
At first glance, this building doesn't stand out as unusual. It's St. Patrick's Catholic Church, a stately and historic church in an inner-ring suburb of Cincinnati, Ohio -- a place with lots of stately and historic churches, in fact.
But as you walk around this historic church, you'll notice that, in fact, the building no longer serves its original function -- today, it's a well-loved Ohio brewery and taproom, and a beautiful and wholly unique one at that.
With so many tart, tasty, and tantalizing drafts available, you might face quite the ordering dilemma. My advice? Try a flight of the brewery's acclaimed American Fruit Tarts -- then pick your favorite.
In fact, the flights at Urban Artifact are so popular, there's an entire night devoted to them. Every Tuesday, stop in for Flight Night for a "taste" of everything. Done and done.
If you're not into sweet brews, Urban Artifact's Pickle Ale is, ahem, kind of a big dill. It's brewed with cucumbers, sea salt, dill, and coriander, packing quite a pickled punch into each can (which, by the way, boasts a bespoke in-house design that's totally dill-ightful).
While this building may no longer be used as originally designed, I happen to think Urban Artifact is doing a marvelous job in continuing the spirit of community and fellowship that attracts many folks to church. In addition to its dangerously delicious ales, this Ohio brewery is celebrated for its inclusivity and "all are welcome" vibes, and that's something we can all say "cheers" to!
Have you been to Urban Artifact before? A brewery is probably the last thing you’d expect to find in a (former) Catholic church, but you know what? Ohio is full of fun surprises and hidden gems sure to stoke and satisfy your curiosity.
Why not turn your visit to Urban Artifact into an overnight adventure? This modern and pet-friendly home in Northside is just a stone’s throw from the brewery, and boasts beautiful Ohio River views.
