The best place to start your scenic drive is, well, at the beginning. Head towards downtown Portsmouth to find the Scioto Heritage Trail. Nestled in the historic Boneyfiddle District, this scenic bypass will take you west.
The Scioto Heritage Trail follows the winding Ohio River to the Shawnee State Forest. Named after the Shawnee Indians who once inhabited the area, the forest is used for many purposes included logging, research, and wildlife habitation.
Did you know that Ohio’s Shawnee State Forest is the largest state forest in the entire state? It’s true! With more than 63,000 acres of woods, Shawnee is an incredible area established in 1922.

From Shawnee State Forest, hit the road again and relax as you take in the green Appalachian hills and Ohio landscape. The Scioto Heritage Trail covers 84 miles of wonderful sightseeing opportunities!

Also viewable along your scenic drive through Ohio is the Philip Moore, Jr. Stone House in West Portsmouth. Drive by to see one of the oldest still-standing primitive stone houses in the state. Build in 1797 by a Revolutionary War veteran, the house later became the site of a Methodist Church.
Continue on your journey to a whimsical place. Straight from a story book, the Otway Bridge is a tranquil covered bridge in Ohio that is a picture-perfect stop along the Scioto Heritage Trail.
Built in 1874 by the Smith Bridge Company, this historic structure is a 127 foot bridge that covers the Scioto Brush Creek. With plenty of green space, a picnic area, and pleasant views, the Otway Bridge is a delightful addition to your scenic byway adventure.
You don’t have to be a fan of old westerns to appreciate the boyhood home of film icon, Roy Rogers! Appearing in more than 100 films, the singing cowboy grew up right here in Ohio until the Great Depression. Travelers can see his childhood home that is now part of The Ohio Historical Society.

Located in Raven Rock State Nature Preserve just beyond the Ohio River Valley is an incredible natural formation. Called Raven Rock, stop in to explore arches and climb to high elevations to see Ohio in an elevated way!
It is said that the rock was once used as a lookout, as well as a sacred ceremonial location, for the Shawnee Indians. Resting on Raven Rock, you will definitely feel like there is truly something special about this place.
Views from the sandstone cliff atop a 500-foot-high bluff are simply stunning. Take the time to gaze at the valley below. The trail is moderately difficult, but worth the view!
