I have a major soft spot for all things mid-century modern, from the set designs on “Mad Men” to vintage clothes and even ’60s dishes like fondue and Ritz cracker hors d’oeuvrs. Retro motor inns certainly speak to my mid-century nostalgia, and South Wind Motel in Columbus, Ohio, is the best of the best. Built in 1959 and remodeled in 2022, this retro motel in Ohio offers guests a delightfully immersive mid-century experience.
German Village is a vibrant, arts-loving neighborhood in Columbus that's full of history and culture. It's a delightfully walkable community full of hidden gems, including today's ridiculously cool destination.
Nestled between German Village & the Brewery District of Columbus, Ohio, South Wind Motel is a charming retro hotel that's simultaneously historic and modern. (Hey, postmodernism!)
The motel opened in 1959, advertising exciting modern amenities such as 21-inch color TVs, wall-to-wall carpeting, and continental breakfast. Its original owner was Benny Newpoff, an avid golfer who, fun fact, actually beat Jack Nicklaus at a pro-am qualifier that same year!
Designed by prominent local architect Harold Schofield, the South Wind Motel was ahead of its time in many ways, and proved to be a delightful addition to America's burgeoning motels scene.
But over time, the South Wind Motel started looking its age. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the once-happening hotel had become a bit worn down, losing its original luster and shine. Until 2021, when the Kelley family purchased the retro motel with plans for a massive renovation.
While tastefully renovated and redone, the Kelleys were careful to stay true to the motel's mid-century roots. Everything from the furniture and decor to the signage and color palates oozes mid-century charm!
However, unlike the '60s, smoking is not permitted in the rooms or anywhere on the property within 20 feet of the building.
There are 22 rooms in this charming little motel, with well-appointed queen rooms and several sumptuous suites from which to choose. Modern amenities like lush Parachute bedding, stylish décor, and bespoke touches from the hotel's Columbus neighbors make these rooms anything but ordinary.

And if you're traveling on the road with your four-legged ride-or-die, you'll be delighted to discover that the “Classic Queen” rooms are dog-friendly! One dog is permitted per room; simply include a pet as an “add on” after confirming your reservation. Easy, peasy!
