Because of this, I spent many weekends in Central Ohio as a kid, and many more weekends exploring the countryside closer to home; namely, the small town of Peebles. A tiny town in Adams County, Peebles is the kind of place you go to get away from it all, and there’s a lovely and remote retreat in Ohio where you can do just that.

Adams County is a resplendent region of Ohio that doesn't get nearly the love it deserves. This area, tucked in between Cincinnati and Marietta -- or, Hueston Woods State Park and Hocking Hills State Park, if you measure distance that way -- is naturally brilliant and bucket-list worthy.

This area offers lots of hiking opportunities -- the Ohio Brush Creek Hiking Trail is a favorite at Serpent Mound -- perfect for getting lost in nature; it's virtually impossible to *not* feel an immense sense of awe and wonder here.
