When you have a free day, what do you do with it? Next time you find yourself with a wide-open schedule for a day, consider taking a day trip in your home state. There’s likely more to explore in Ohio within a day’s time than you realize. From historic towns to natural wonders you’ll love, here are 8 fantastic one-day road trip destinations in Ohio:
1. Ohio Amish Country
Take a buggy ride around the village, tour an Amish home, visit the craft mall and so much more at Schrock's Heritage Village, which is located at 4363 State Route 39 Berlin, OH 44610. Afterwards, hit up Walnut Creek Cheese for all kinds of goodies to take home.
2. Cuyahoga Valley National Park
Ohio's only national park in the northeast region of the state is a must-visit for any nature lover. Within the park, there are several beautiful highlights and trails to explore, particularly The Ledges Trail (pictured), which features an area that was once covered by an ancient sea. Melting glaciers helped to form what are now captivating ledges you can hike through. There's also a breathtaking 65-foot waterfall within the park (also pictured) that flows from Brandywine Creek. Known as Brandywine Falls, these easily accessible, beautiful falls are a popular highlight within the park. They're located at 8176 Brandywine Rd., Sagamore Hills, OH 44067.
3. Marblehead Lighthouse Park
The oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the United States side of the Great Lakes is a beautiful sight to behold. Since 1822, this lighthouse has been an active aid-to-navigation. Today, you can tour the lighthouse for a small fee, observe the museum in the keeper's house and picnic on the grounds of the park. For what's arguably the best ice cream in the Lake Erie area, stop on your way through Port Clinton at Toft's Ice Cream Parlor. It's located at 4016 E Harbor Rd., Port Clinton, OH 43452.
4. Columbus
Indulge your inner mad scientist with this one of a kind, hands-on science museum in Columbus. In 2008, Parents Magazine named COSI the #1 science museum for families in America. With constantly updated exhibits, it's tons of fun for both kids and adults alike. (COSI is located at 333 W Broad St., Columbus, OH 43215.) After wards, walk The Scioto Mile and enjoy the views, fountains and more.
5. German Village
Just south of downtown Columbus, you'll find this quaint, historic village, which was settled by a large number of German immigrants in the mid-1800s. Stop at the 32-room Book Loft, stroll through Schiller Park and dine at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus und Restaurant for an unforgettable experience. No matter the season, German Village is a lovely day trip destination you're sure to love.
6. Yellow Springs
Tucked away in southwest Ohio you'll find the state's most charming and unique town, where the benches are a work of art and the buildings are full of character — inside and out. From the shops and restaurants to the aesthetics and entertainment, nothing at Yellow Springs is ordinary or average. Find the official "Yellow Spring" at Glen Helen Nature Preserve, eat at The Winds Cafe and Bakery and stop at Young’s Jersey Dairy before you leave, which is located at 6880 Springfield Xenia Rd., Yellow Springs, OH 45387.
7. Roscoe Village
Roscoe Village in Coshocton, Ohio is a charming canal town Ohio history buffs will absolutely love. Complete with horse-drawn canal boat rides, living history tours and old-fashioned shops, this is one town everyone in Ohio needs to explore at least once. Even if you don’t consider yourself a history buff, you’ll fall in love with the old world charm and beautiful surroundings. The visitor's center is located at 600 N Whitewoman St., Coshocton, OH 43812.
8. Hocking Hills
Hocking Hills State Park is arguably Ohio's most beloved state park, where waterfalls, caves, unique rock formations and hiking trails abound. Old Man's Cave has an interesting history and origin to its name. Legend has it, a 19th-century hermit who once lived in the cave, (named Richard Rowe,) is buried under a cave ledge in the area. Within the Hocking Hills State Park area in Logan is the beloved Rock House, where visitors can freely explore this unique cave with a 25 ft. high ceiling and window-like openings. Evidence shows that the homey Rock House was often used for shelter by past visitors, Native Americans and even bootleggers, robbers and horse thieves. Hocking Hills State Park is located at 19852 Ohio 664, Logan, OH 43138.
