To experience some of Ohio’s best natural scenery, a trip to Hocking Hills State Park is a must. This lovely park is characterized by caves and waterfalls, offering an almost otherworldly landscape. There’s a reason it’s one of Ohio’s most popular parks, set in the namesake Hocking Hills region of southeastern Ohio. The park has gained both national and international acclaim, mostly for its collection of recessed caves. In fact, you can see three of the state’s most fascinating caves with a single trip to Hocking Hills State Park. Let’s begin our exploration!
1. Ash Cave

First up on our list of the best caves in Ohio is the iconic Ash Cave. The single largest recess cave in the state, it attracts countless visitors each year. While beautiful in photographs, the cave is even more stunning in person. The cave measures 100 feet deep, with a 90-foot ceiling and 700-foot mouth. Standing near the entrance of this cave, you won't help but feel tiny.

Next up is the most popular of all hiking areas at Hocking Hills State Park: Old Man's Cave. The famous cave is named for Richard Rowe, a man who allegedly lived near the mouth of the cave. What makes this site so spectacular is not only the sky-high cave itself but also the waterfall located along the same trail. Learn more about how you can get the most out of your visit to Old Man's Cave in Ohio.
Last but not least, Whispering Cave is another must-see attraction in Hocking Hills State Park. The second-largest cave in the park, this destination can be reached via the Hemlock Bridge Trail. As you may have gathered by the name, the entire trail is lined by towering Hemlock trees. You'll also notice some rare geological sites, such as the effect of honeycomb weathering in the photo above. There's a lot to admire about this unique natural wonder in Ohio.
