With Memorial Day just around the corner, now is the time to consider how and where you will spend this important federal holiday. Although there are several monuments and local memorials scattered throughout Ohio to honor veterans, there are some sites in Ohio that serve to not only honor veterans but also showcase American history. The following are some of what we think would make great Memorial Day getaways—right here in Ohio—for you to visit with friends and family to honor our fallen heroes.
Officially finished in 1847, this beautiful building is known for its distinctive rotunda and regularly hosts tours organized by the Ohio Statehouse Museum Education Center.
Capitol Square features several monuments and statues dedicated to tracing the history and development of Ohio as a state and honoring its military and political leaders, as well as its brave soldiers.
Veterans Plaza showcases two curved limestone walls that are inscribed with actual correspondence sent home to families, friends and loved ones by members of the armed forces.
In addition to several other monuments, this park features a 125 ft. long polished black granite wall with the names of the 3,095 Ohioans lost during the Vietnam War.
Established in 2005 by local veterans seeking to honor the men and women from Ohio that have defended America in the Global War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001.
This memorial stands to commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie and Commodore Oliver Perry's victory over the British during the War of 1812. It also serves to celebrate the lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States that followed the war.
On Memorial Day, staff and volunteers reenact camp life for soldiers and a special wreath laying ceremony takes place at the Fort Meigs Monument.
Turns out you don’t always have to travel all the way to Washington D.C. to observe beautiful memorials of fallen heroes. Where do you spend Memorial Day in Ohio?
