I write like it's my job - because it is! I have a Master's in English and love words: crossword puzzles, Scrabble games, Wordle, and, of course, good, old-fashioned books.
I'm a writer and editor at OnlyInYourState, and a contributing writer at Cincinnati Magazine. I love the Great Outdoors and am endlessly awestruck by this beautiful country of ours. Coffee keeps me going, yoga keeps me sane, my kids keep me grounded, and my writing keeps me inspired.
There’s a National Natural Landmark in Ohio that even the most well-traveled explorers don’t know about. In Urbana, Cedar Bog Nature Preserve was the first nature preserve in Ohio purchased with state money and is considered by many to be Ohio’s premiere natural area. Featuring a woodland fen created by glaciers eons ago, this Ohio park is one big, beautiful natural wonder that’s well-worth exploring.
Bogs aren't typically something typically associated with the Buckeye State, but there are so many hidden, incredible natural wonders to discover in Ohio. Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is one of them.
Located north of Springfield in east-central Ohio, Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is a protected area of about 450 acres of pristine, wild land. Despite its moniker, Cedar Bog is actually a “fen” and not a bog; a fen is a wetland area that drains water, whereas a bog retains water.
A bit of context: Cedar Bog State Nature Preserve is a fen left behind by the retreating glaciers of the Wisconsin glaciation about 12,000-18,000 years ago.
Comprised of glorious meadows and woodlands, Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is a designated National Natural Landmark, one of only 25 in the state of Ohio. Of these natural areas, Cedar Bog ranks highest on the Ohio Floristic Diversity Index for its great diversity of plants.
What does all that mean, really? It means that Cedar Bog Nature Preserve is a wonderful, beautiful natural wonder in Ohio that's just waiting to be explored, experienced, and admired.
Have you visited Cedar Bog Nature Preserve before? Did you know about this natural wonder in Ohio? Exploring this little-known gem is something everyone ought to do.
